The Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders (LASPO) Bill has now received Royal Assent and will become an Act of Parliament on the last day of the parliamentary session; the Government having suffered a record 14 defeats in total.

On 17 April, the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders (LASPO) Bill went back to the House of Commons. The Commons overturned all of the amendments on which it had been defeated in the House of Lords, which included exclusion of disease claims from the Jackson reforms and retention of legal aid for children in clinical negligence cases. The debate will continue and it is anticipated that it will be concluded before next Wednesday (2 May) ahead of the Queen's Speech and the new Parliamentary session.

The Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders (LASPO) Bill was read for the third time in the House of Lords on 27 March, during which the government suffered another two defeats on legal aid relating to children, including in clinical negligence cases.

The Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders (LASPO) Bill will be read for a third time in the House of Lords on 27 March, and unlike the House of Commons, amendments can be made – provided the issue has not been fully considered and voted on at an earlier stage.
