Civil Justice Group Weekly Update 8

At the end of the fifth sitting of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders (LASPO) Bill Committee in the House of Lords, peers had reached the end of the consideration of amendments relating to Part 1 of the Bill that deals with provisions on legal aid. Throughout the passage of the Bill it is this element that has proved to be the most contentious and the five lengthy sessions were in line with this trend.

The LASPO Bill now goes into the remaining committee stages which are scheduled to last until 9 February.

Also this week, Jack Straw MP has said that he will continue to fight for the reform of the UK motor insurance market, and the government has published the Financial Services Bill that will see the replacement of the tripartite structure of regulation and do away with the FSA.
